Summer learning journey Week 3 Bonus Activity A Bilingual Schooling System

A Bilingual Schooling System
For much of the past century, schools in New Zealand taught students in only one language – English. In 1972, Ngā Tamatoa member, Mrs. Hana Jackson, submitted a petition to Parliament to ask the government to include the teaching of Te Reo Māori (the Māori language) and Māori culture in New Zealand schools. We still use petitions to this day when we want an organisation (e.g. a school) to make a change.

Think about your school. What is one thing that you would like change. Would you like to learn about different things? Maybe you think school should only be open 3 days a week?

On your blog, write a letter to your principal to try and convince him/her to make the change. Ensure that your letter is polite and respect

Hi Mr Burt what I want to change is peoples attitude and also rubbish. I know some student in our school say that they don't care if they littler but they should care because looking after our environment is very important. Some birds might think it's food and eat it then they get sick and maybe die. The students at Pt England School should always be respectful to there teacher, family and other students in the school. The students should always be respectful when they got to places. Student at Pt England School should always be helpful.

  1. Hey there Sonnia, it's great to read the letter you have written to your principal. I love that you've taken the opportunity to talk about the rubbish around your school. You have spoken about the damage to birds and the environment. I hope that your principal makes some changes in the school.

How do you think you can improve the rubbish situation in the school?

    Thanks, Billy

  2. Kia Ora Sonnia,

Awesome blog post. I really like the way you have put in so much effort & you've added in so much descriptive words in it as well. I really enjoyed reading the starting of your writing as it made me really happy. It was great to see that you were talking about students littering around the entire School. I really do hope people stop bullying & stop littering soon. Keep up the awesome work Sonnia.

    Yours sincerely,
    Hinerangi:)
